Ryder, a former Hall shelter dog, helps sniff out problems for USDA

Some dogs sniff out bombs. Some dogs sniff out drugs. Ryder sniffs out invasive pests and diseases in food coming across the border for the United States Department of Agriculture.

Ryder, a black labrador about 3 years old, came to the shelter in October. When no one claimed him, he was recruited to the USDA program Nov. 5.

Dogs like Ryder train six to 12 months and must meet specific standards before even being considered for the job.

The dog’s focus, attention span and sense of smell are evaluated, said Cindy Langman, program coordinator at the Hall County Animal Shelter, who added that representatives from the USDA program visit the Hall shelter a few times per year.

“It’s very important that the dog is attentive — you see such a wide variety of animals here at the shelter and they get so distracted wanting to look around, but they want a dog that’s very focused on them,” Langman said. “The handlers will take a treat or toy and move it around to judge their eye contact and how attentive the dog is being … apparently Ryder fit the bill.”

Occasionally some dogs don’t pass the training period, but Ryder did well, Langman said.

Now, he “works on the Southern border in Texas inspecting various conveyances for prohibited food items that may contain invasive pests and diseases,” said Michael L. Smith, director of the USDA’s National Detector Dog Training Center.

Smith last week sent a letter of thanks to the Hall shelter for Ryder and the care he received.

“We would like to express our gratitude for your allocation of canine Ryder, which has ultimately allowed us to continue the mission of protecting the health and value of American agriculture and natural resources,” he wrote.

Ryder is housed in the program’s commercial kennel, which has very strict guidelines, Smith added.

The program, known as the “Beagle Brigade,” started in 1984. Beagles are the ambassador for the program and were determined as the best suited breed, though obviously they are not the only breeds in the program.

The program from the beginning looked at animal shelters along with private donors and breeders for beagles that met the standards.

“I think it is so impressive that they consider shelter dogs,” Langman said.

Smith said most dogs are donated, but they do purchase them if needed.

In addition to the USDA, other dogs from the training program can be placed at airports or private companies like FedEx or UPS.

Police: Woman collecting money for chief’s family is scammer

A woman is running a scam by calling for donations for a police chief and his family, according to Oakwood authorities.

Oakwood Police Investigator Todd Templeton said at least four businesses in Oakwood and Gainesville were solicited for money from this scam.

A woman claiming to work at city hall “told the local business owners a fictitious story that involved the police chief’s daughter and alleged she had been the victim of a house fire,” Templeton wrote in a news release.

“The caller reported the family had lost everything including a pet dog,” Templeton wrote.

The city hall and the police chief mentioned in the call were unspecified, Templeton said.

In another call, the suspect told the business she worked for Flowery Branch City Hall and was collecting for Flowery Branch Police Chief David Spillers’ daughter-in-law.

Flowery Branch Police and Oakwood Police are working on a joint criminal investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Templeton at 770-534-2364.

The suspect has not been named, and charges are pending.

Shoppers swarm stores for tax-free holiday savings

The Henry family showed up at the Gainesville Target Friday morning to find some back-to-school deals. Shopping with nephew Xander Sherwen, 11, in tow, they bought clothes, pens, pencils, lunch boxes.

And, owls.

Six-year-old Alee Henry is enamored of the big-eyed night dwellers. Mom Melissa Henry fished an iridescent, stuffed owl out of the red buggy.

Like the Henrys, shoppers from all over the state swarmed stores for clothing, computers and school supplies, taking advantage of a back-to-school tax-free holiday that kicked off in the early morning hours Friday. They can continue to take advantage of the tax-free sales today. View a full of tax-free items here.

The Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget estimated that the two-day holiday will save Georgians up to $73 million.

“Georgia’s back-to-school tax-free holiday is designed to afford hard-working families and students an opportunity to save money on essential school items, clothing and technology,” said Gov. Nathan Deal in a news release.

In addition, shoppers will get a break from road construction this weekend to go along with the sales tax suspension.

The Georgia Department of Transportation announced it will suspend construction-related closures within five miles of all shopping malls or major shopping districts and on all interstates and major routes until 10 p.m. Saturday.

In Hall County, school starts next Friday.

Gainesville City Schools kicks off the year on Wednesday.

The Henry family of Clarkesville said they showed up in Gainesville Friday to shop for the same reason that the Houston family said they did.

“There’s just nowhere to shop where we live,” said Dahlonega resident Heather Houston, who bought school supplies for daughter Kayleigh, 7, at Target. She pushed 9-month-old Natalie Houston in a shopping cart as Kayleigh tried on backpacks.

“I’m excited,” Heather said. “This is a good chance to save money this weekend.”
