Joe McGoogan dies after winning election to Clermont Town Council

After winning the Clermont Town Council seat Tuesday, Joe McGoogan died Thursday morning, according to Clermont officials. He was 71.

Clermont Mayor James Nix confirmed McGoogan’s death Friday afternoon.

Nix said he was unsure of the cause but was told McGoogan was transported to the hospital before he died.

McGoogan defeated Jimmy McDonald Tuesday with 71 percent of the vote for an at-large seat on the council. Nix said the council is figuring out what to do in terms of filling McGoogan’s seat.

“We’ll have to go through the process … and try and get that done for a March election,” Nix said. “That’s what we’re trying to work through right now.”

A March 1 election has already been set to replace Clermont Town Councilman John Brady, whose term representing Ward 2 ends Dec. 31. Filling the post normally would have taken place in elections Tuesday, but no one qualified this summer to run.

Qualifying for the Ward 2 seat is set for Jan. 11-13 at Town Hall, 109 King St., according to an ordinance approved Tuesday night by the council. The fee is $43.20.

Voting will take place at Concord Baptist Church, 640 Main St.

Authorities: Hall jailer had lewd photos of 16-year-old

A Hall County jailer allegedly had lewd videos on his cellphone of an underage girl, according to authorities.

Neftali Jaramillo, 20, of Gainesville, was terminated from his job and arrested Thursday, charged with sexual exploitation.

“During the course of an investigation in which Jaramillo was accused of taking items of clothing from the 16-year-old victim, investigators located (lewd) videos of the minor on Jaramillo’s cellphone,” Hall County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Deputy Nicole Bailes said in a news release.

Jaramillo had a prior relationship with the girl and obtained the videos consensually, but she was under the age of 18 when the videos were created, Bailes said.

Jaramillo was recently hired and was still a probationary employee.

Jaramillo has posted a $11,200 bond and will have a committal hearing Nov. 23.
